Italian lawmaker Roberto Calderoli likens black minister Cecile Kyenge to orangutan

A senior parliamentarian in the anti-immigration Northern League party likened Italy's first black minister to an orangutan and only apologised on Sunday after a storm of criticism.
Cecile Kyenge, an Italian citizen born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been the target of repeated racial slurs since her appointment as integration minister in April.
Roberto Calderoli, vice president of Italy's Senate, said on Saturday at a political rally in the northern town of Treviglio: "I love animals - bears and wolves, as everyone knows - but when I see the pictures of Kyenge I cannot but think of, even if I'm not saying she is one, the features of an orangutan."
He said the success of Kyenge encouraged "illegal immigrants" to come to Italy, and she should be a minister "in her own country", according to media reports.
Politicians, including some from his own party, lambasted Calderoli, with some calling for him to resign as Senate vice president. In an official statement and on Twitter, Prime Minister Enrico Letta said the comments were unacceptable.
"They go beyond all limits. Full solidarity and support to Cecile. Forward with your and our work," Letta said. For most of the day, Calderoli said he had no intention of resigning and offered only a qualified apology.
"I did not mean to offend and if minister Kyenge was offended I am sorry, but my comment was made within a much broader political speech that criticised the minister and her policies," he said.
But after hours of nearly universal condemnation and extensive coverage by the international media, Calderoli called Kyenge in the evening to apologise directly.
"I just spoke with minister Kyenge and I apologised," Calderoli told state news agency Ansa. Kyenge is campaigning to make it easier for immigrants to gain citizenship, and she backs a law that would automatically make anyone born on Italian soil a citizen.
Last month, a Northern League member in the European parliament was expelled from the eurosceptic Europe of Freedom and Democracy group for making racist remarks about her.
Mario Borghezio had attacked Kyenge for wanting to impose "tribal traditions" in Italy as a member of a "bonga bonga" government, an apparent play on the so-called "bunga bunga" parties of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Opposition politician Calderoli, twice a cabinet minister under Berlusconi, has often caused offence. In 2006, he was forced to resign as reform minister after displaying a T-shirt mocking the Prophet Mohammad during a state news broadcast.
The same year, after Italy won the soccer World Cup, he disparaged the opposing French team, which he said had lost because its players were "niggers, Muslims and communists".
Before Calderoli's apology, Kyenge told AGI news agency he should think of his responsibility as a senior Senate member. "I don't want to address Calderoli the person, but as a representative of an institution: reflect on what you want to represent through your language," she said.

House speaker calls slurs against Kyenge 'shameful'

Boldrini voices support for first black minister

30 April, 14:52
House speaker calls slurs against Kyenge 'shameful'(ANSA) - Rome, April 30 - House Speaker Laura Boldrini spoke out on Tuesday about racist insults directed at newly appointed Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge, calling them "shameful for a civilized country". The former spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Boldrini said that "like many of the men and women who saw Kyenge sworn in, I feel that Italy is making an important step forward, not only for the new generation but for all of us, because we understand how enriching an encounter between cultures can be". Kyenge, a 48-year-old MP for Premier Enrico Letta's centre-left Democratic Party (PD), was sworn in as Italy's first black minister on Sunday.

"Maybe not everyone likes this road we are on, but vulgar racism aimed at someone - mostly on the Internet, but not only - is in no way tolerable," Boldrini said.

"This is not a question of freedom of expression, but incitement of racial hatred, which is a crime, even if carried out on the Internet," she said.

The House Speaker also noted that Kyenge is not the only supporter of proposed reforms to Italy's citizenship law for children born in the country to foreigners that has been criticised by the regionalist, anti-immigrant Northern League.

Kyenge, along with Moroccan-born PD MP Khalid Chaouki, PD MP Roberto Speranza and ex-PD leader Pier Luigi Bersani, have proposed a change to the current citizenship law which dictates that only the children of Italian citizens can automatically become citizens themselves, while those born on Italian soil to non-Italian parents become eligible on their 18th birthday.

A famous example is AC Milan Striker Mario Balotelli, one of Italy's biggest soccer stars and a forward on the national team, who was born in Italy to parents from Ghana but did not become a citizen until he applied when he turned 18.

Senegal calls for inquiry into Florence murders

Senegal calls for inquiry into Florence murders

City offers sympathy to Senegalese community

14 December, 13:37
Senegal calls for inquiry into Florence murders(ANSA) - Florence, December 14 - The government of Senegal on Wednesday expressed its indignation over the brutal killing of two Senegalese street vendors in Florence and called for a "full inquiry into the incident".

The government issued a statement through Agence France Press news agency after the two men were gunned down and three others were wounded by right-wing extremist Gianluca Casseri who killed himself after the shootings on Tuesday.

The city's professional soccer team Fiorentina cancelled a youth festival on Wednesday and called for a day of mourning after the shootings shocked the city.

The three wounded men, who are also Senegalese, are in a serious but stable condition. Florence's city council issued a statement, also translated into French and English, saying: "The city of Florence offers its sympathy to the Senegalese community".

Mayor Matteo Renzi met community officials on Wednesday and was to meet Minister for Cooperation Andrea Riccardi to discuss the murders.

Police manned the streets in front of the city's cathedral or Duomo late Tuesday when members of the Senegalese community took to the streets to protest against the killings.

Many Senegalese closed their stalls in the San Lorenzo market area in the city's historic centre where the second wave of shootings took place.

A banner erected in the area said: "No to racism. We are closed in a sign of solidarity for the victims of racism".

The city called for a minute's silence to remember the victims and the council was to hold a special meeting late Wednesday to discuss the killings.

JUVE FANS AND RACISM

Soccer: Juve in Balotelli ban
Next match behind closed doors after racist chants
(ANSA) - Milan, April 20 - Juventus has been handed a one-match stadium ban because of racist chants directed at Inter Milan's Mario Balotelli during Saturday's 1-1 draw.

The ban means Juve will play its next Serie A home match, against Lecce on May 3, behind closed doors Soccer's sporting judge Gianpaolo Tosel issued the ban after finding that the jeering against the Italian-born player of Ghanaian descent ''came from various parts of the ground'' and officials did not make any apparent move to stop it.

Juve has apologised for the incident, which has been widely condemned.

Saturday's was not the first Serie A game in which Italy hopeful Balotelli, who scored Inter's goal to virtually seal its scudetto hopes, has been subjected to racist booing.

WHY OBAMA TO USA AND WE BERLOSCONI???

Well well, for foreigner living in Italy today it was a double sweet sensation to see Obama and family greet the nation as the USA President elect.
The joy was general even within the Chines community noted for their withdrawn attitude to things that do not connect them and their business directly. All foreigners found a point of unity in this victory.

The exchange of congratulatory compliments and greetings , feasts , offers of coffees and drinks in bars and pizzerias were fantastic. Every black (even Indians etc) person in the community I live was a toast . I think I have at least a paid coffee in each of the 25 bars in the area I live .

The average Italian was happy because Obama represented hope ; something that is becoming more elusive daily here in Italy. '.......He is handsome, elegant, energetic, intelligent and a new unifying personality a sign of equality, liberty, democracy and freedom that has not been full established for us Italians,,,' said some of the young people I spoke with at work.

Most people liked him "... just because P.M Berlusconi didn't like him...." Berlusconi was the only European Head of state that declared openly his preference for MacCain during the campaign.
Others Italians just didn't care for anything but the fact that someone was able to "...interrupt Bushissmo...." which they feared McCain may have continued to propagate.

Therefore ladies and gentlemen, not every Italian is Silivio or Gasapperi
. As usual the politicians here speak and act different from those who elected them.

VIDEO: DALL'INVIATO ALESSANDRA LONGO

Decisa ma senza esagerare, senza andare all'escalation.

Racist attack in Milan leaves one dead

Racist attack in Milan leaves one dead

Italian police on Monday played down accusations that the murder of an immigrant beaten to death after he allegedly stole a packet of biscuits from a Milan bar over the weekend was a racist attack.

Nineteen-year-old Abdul Salam Guibre, an Italian citizen originally from Burkina Faso, is thought to have stolen the biscuits with two friends from a bar near the city's central station on Sunday.

Bar owners Fausto Cristofoli, 51, and his son Daniele, 31, chased the three men in a van they used as a mobile cafe', allegedly shouting ''thieves, f****** niggers'', before catching them up.

The three men began throwing bottles at the bar owners and armed themselves with improvised clubs, but were beaten with an iron bar used to open the van's service window.

Guibre was hit around the head and fell into a coma, dying in hospital a few hours later.

Milan mobile police unit chief Francesco Messina admitted there had been ''an exchange of insults'' between the men, but said the attack had been motivated by theft.

''The fact is that a boy is dead because of a packet of biscuits and there are two people who have committed murder and who will pay,'' he said.

The incident reignited a debate over the Italian government's recent crackdown on public safety and immigrant crime, with Democratic Party opposition leader Walter Veltroni accusing the centre-right of encouraging ''a climate of hate and intolerance''.

Italian Communists' Party leader Paolo Ferrero singled out the Northern League party for ''xenophobic and racist campaigns''.

''Episodes like the one in Milan are the fruit of a climate of poison created by political forces like the League that hold up immigrants as the source of all evil,'' Ferrero said.

Northern League House whip Roberto Cota hit back at criticism as ''unworthy exploitation'' of Guibre's murder.

But Milan's centre-right mayor, Letizia Moratti, acknowledged the anti-immigrant overtones of the attack in her condolences to Guibre's family.

''Milan strongly condemns such episodes of intolerance and racism,'' she said.

Buona giornata.
