STOP FGM

International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation is a UN-sponsored awareness day that takes place February 6 each year since 2003. February 6thhas been dedicated to the intolerance of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM.)

2017 Theme: "Building a solid and interactive

bridge between Africa and the world to accelerate ending FGM by 2030."

Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.
It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls. The practice also violates their rights to health, security and physical integrity, their right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and their right to life when the procedure results in death.
To promote the abandonment of FGM, coordinated and systematic efforts are needed, and they must engage whole communities and focus on human rights and gender equality. These efforts should emphasize societal dialogue and the empowerment of communities to act collectively to end the practice. They must also address the sexual and reproductive health needs of women and girls who suffer from its consequences.
UNFPA, jointly with UNICEF, leads the largest global programme to accelerate the abandonment of FGM. The programme currently focuses on 17 African countries and also supports regional and global initiatives.
Key Facts:
  • Globally, it is estimated that at least 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone some form of FGM.
  • Girls 14 and younger represent 44 million of those who have been cut, with the highest prevalence of FGM among this age in Gambia at 56 per cent, Mauritania 54 per cent and Indonesia where around half of girls aged 11 and younger have undergone the practice.
  • Countries with the highest prevalence among girls and women aged 15 to 49 are Somalia 98 per cent, Guinea 97 per cent and Djibouti 93 per cent.
  • FGM is mostly carried out on young girls sometime between infancy and age 15.
  • FGM cause severe bleeding and health issues including cysts, infections, infertility as well as complications in childbirth increased risk of newborn deaths.
  • FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women.
  • The Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 calls for an end to FGM by 2030 under Goal 5 on Gender Equality, Target 5.3 Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
  • The elimination of FGM has been called for by numerous inter-governmental organizations, including the African Union, the European Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as well as in three resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly

Widows to benefit from Rural Health Insurance Scheme in Enugu

Widows to benefit from Rural Health Insurance Scheme in Enugu

By NAN on December 24, 2015 11:17 am

No fewer than 2,000 widows in Nenwe community of Enugu State are to benefit from the Rural Health Insurance Scheme, sponsored by Jonalfa Hope International Foundation.
The founder of the foundation, retired Air Vice-Marshal Chris Chukwu, announced this on Thursday in Nenwe during the inauguration of Nenwe Health Scheme.
Chukwu, an indigene of the community, noted that the gesture was to bring succour to the widows, whom he said are suffering untold hardship.
He said that Nenwe with 27 villages have over 3,000 widows.
“We embarked on a re-verification exercise to have an authentic data of widows in the community and the actual numbers we will be sponsoring.
“At the end of the exercise, 2,000 widows were captured and we are making a commitment to sponsor them in 2016, and beyond as our finances can go, “ he said.
Chukwu said that the foundation had deposited N2.5 million out of N7.2 million required for the scheme annually.
He appealed to the managers of the scheme to review downward the registration fees for beneficiaries to enable more people to participate.
“The registration fee of a beneficiary per annum is much and we urge the managers to take another look at it.
“We have already deposited N2.5 million in the accounts of Nenwe Community Mutual Health Association to ensure we started on a solid footing,’’ he said.
Chukwu said that the foundation was also compiling a comprehensive data of all orphans of primary school age in the community with a view to training them.
“Our mission is to bring succour to the less privileged and other vulnerable groups; our vision is towards a society free from the tears of poverty,’’ Chukwu said.
In an address, Mrs Akunna Ochor, Enugu State Coordinator, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), commended the people of Nenwe for embracing the scheme.
Ochor said that the community was the first in the South-East to embrace the Community Based Health Insurance Scheme.
She said that it had been a tortuous journey to formalise the agreement between the managers and the community, remarking that all processes had been concluded.
The coordinator expressed regret that most people in the rural communities are yet to appreciate the importance of the scheme, which she said would help them live a healthy life.
Ochor, who appealed to the people to embrace the scheme, said that there are several incentives in the scheme.
“Any community that gets about 1,000 beneficiaries, government will intervene and assist pregnant women and children below five years in such communities free of charge,“ she said.
Ochor urged the sponsors of the scheme to ensure its sustainability so as to reduce incidences of untimely deaths in the community.
Mrs Elizabeth Ugwueke, one of the widows, praised the sponsor for the initiative.
“You have wiped our tears and we will remain grateful to you for this intervention,’’ she said.

ALCOHOL AND CANCER

New alcohol guidelines: What you need to know

Alcohol bottlesImage copyrightThinkstock
Men and women should drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week - the equivalent of six pints of average strength beer or seven glasses of wine - in order to keep their health risks low, new guidelines have recommended.
The new Department of Health limits - which come into effect on Friday - replace the previous ones on drinking, which were set out 21 years ago.
Here is a breakdown of what you need to know:

Why now?

The government previously said it had heard "sufficient concerns" from experts about what was known about alcohol and its health risks.
The previous guidelines came out in 1995 and the links between alcohol and cancer and heart disease were not as well understood then as they are now.
It is now known that the risks from alcohol start from any level of regular drinking and rise with the amount being consumed. The new guidelines have been set at a level to keep the risk of mortality from cancers or other diseases "low".
Work on the new guidelines has been under way since 2013.

So what's changed?

The new changes affect men more than women.
Previously, women were advised to drink no more than 2-3 units a day and men no more than 3-4. This technically meant men could consume around 28 units a week, although the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) recommended no more than 21 units should be drunk over seven days.
The old guidance said that by sticking within recommended limits, there was "only a low risk of causing harm in most circumstances".
However, the new rules now state that both men and women should drink no more than 14 units over the course of three days or more. This is the equivalent of a bottle and a half of wine over the course of a week.
The rules also say that it's best not to "save up units" and drink them all in one go and to make sure you have alcohol-free days.

I thought a small amount of alcohol was good for you?

The new recommendations appear to be moving away from this long-held belief.
The review found that the benefits of alcohol for heart health only apply for women aged 55 and over - and even then it's in very small amounts, around five units a week.
The guidelines say: "There is no justification for recommending drinking on health grounds - nor for starting drinking for health reasons."
It also says that evidence in support for drinking alcohol in small amounts to maintain good health was "weaker than it was at the time of 1995".

What about drinking while pregnant?

It's an issue which has caused great debate.
But the new guidelines for pregnant women have now been updated in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to be clear that no level of alcohol is safe to drink in pregnancy.
Previously it was recommended that for women who had opted to drink, consuming no more than one or two units of alcohol - equivalent to one or two small glasses of wine - would "minimise the risk to your baby".
The new guidance says that for women who do drink that amount the risk to their baby is likely to be low, but "nevertheless, we cannot rule out the risks altogether".

Is there a safe drinking level?

No. The new recommendations are at pains to point out that these guidelines are not for "safe" drinking, but rather just at minimising risk of illness.
All alcohol consumption carries some risk, the guidance says.
"The vast majority of the population can reduce health risks further if they reduce drinking below the guideline levels, or do not drink at all," the guidance says.
Drinking above the new recommended 14 units a week is the point at which a person's risk of an early death increases by 1% - the equivalent amount of risk as driving a car.

What's the reaction?

Prof Matt Field, who is a lecturer in addiction at the University of Liverpool, said one of the most important changes with the recommendations is that there is no "safe" level of alcohol consumption.
"Any amount of drinking is associated with increased risk of a number of diseases; the often-reported protective effects will not apply to the majority of people and where they do apply, they refer to very low levels of drinking. So, any amount of alcohol consumption carries some risk," he said.
"It is also important to emphasise why this advice is being issued. This is not about telling people what to do. Instead, people have a right to accurate information about alcohol and its health risks so that they can make informed decisions about their drinking behaviour."
Dr Niamh Fitzgerald, who is a lecturer in alcohol studies at the University of Stirling, said: "The purpose of these new guidelines is to provide the public with the latest accurate information on how they can reduce health risks from alcohol, if they choose to drink.
"Most people are aware of the links between smoking and cancer, but far fewer are aware of evidence linking alcohol consumption with an increased risk of future health problems, in particular cancers of the mouth, intestines and breast cancer in women."
Chief Medical Officer for England, Dame Sally Davies, said: "I want pregnant women to be very clear that they should avoid alcohol as a precaution. Although the risk of harm to the baby is low if they have drunk small amounts of alcohol before becoming aware of the pregnancy, there is no 'safe' level of alcohol to drink when you are pregnant."

Polio: WHO urges hygienic standards in labs

Polio: WHO urges hygienic standards in labs

…plans nationwide inspection of labs

In an effort to maintain a polio-free nation, the World Health Organisation, WHO, has advised the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, AMLSN, to strictly observe professional ethics in operation of laboratories in the country.
This is even as the organisation has set out to inspect all laboratories in the country to ensure they comply with the rules and regulations establishing them.

A WHO laboratory polio containment consultant, Mr. Chinedu Chukwubuike, disclosed this over the weekend in Owerri during the inauguration of new executive members of the association in Imo State. He lamented that most laboratories were operating below standard and in very unhygienic environment.
He said though Nigeria was declared polio-free in the last one year, there was need for such declaration to be sustained by strict observance to regulations.
According to him, there is likelihood of polio springing up from laboratories if the scientists fail to observe the rules.
Chukwubuike said he has been contracted to inspect laboratories in the country, adding that any laboratory that falls short of standard must be sanctioned by relevant agencies.
He urged Nigerians to take immunisation exercise very serious, adding that parents must ensure that every child below the age of five was properly immunised.
The WHO ambassador warned that Nigeria cannot afford to experience the dangers associated with polio, calling on the citizenry to contribute to the sustenance of a polio-free country.
New chairman of AMLSN, Imo State branch, Mr. Anthony Uhuegbu, promised to cooperate with WHO in the fight against polio.
He said his administration will ensure that members comply with professional ethics in discharging their duties.
Uhuegbu advised medical practitioners to discharge their duties effectively and widen the jurisdiction of their training.
He frowned at medical doctors and pharmacists who are in the habit of conducting medical tests on patients where it is outside their training.

BETTER LATE ,THAN 'THE LATE.....

Obama To Send 3,000 Military Forces To Fight Ebola In West Africa

Posted: Updated:
EBOLA
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama declared Tuesday that the Ebola epidemic in West Africa could threaten security around the world, and he ordered 3,000 U.S. military personnel to the region in emergency aid muscle for a crisis spiraling out of control.

The question was whether the aid would be enough and was coming in time. An ominous World Health Organization forecast said that with so many people now spreading the virus, the number of Ebola cases could start doubling every three weeks.
"If the outbreak is not stopped now, we could be looking at hundreds of thousands of people affected, with profound economic, political and security implications for all of us," Obama said Tuesday after briefings in Atlanta with doctors and officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University.
Obama called on other countries to join in quickly supplying more health workers, equipment and money. By day's end the administration asked Congress to shift another $500 million in Pentagon money to the effort, meaning the U.S. could end up devoting $1 billion to contain the outbreak.
"It's a potential threat to global security if these countries break down," Obama said, speaking of the hardest-hit nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. At least 2,400 people have died, with Liberia bearing the brunt. Nearly 5,000 people have fallen ill in those countries and Nigeria and Senegal since the disease was first recognized in March. WHO says it anticipates the figure could rise to more than 20,000, and the disease could end up costing nearly $1 billion to contain.
Obama described the task ahead as "daunting" but said there was hope in the fact that "the world knows how to fight this disease."
His expression grim, he described the "gut-wrenching" scene of a family in Liberia. The father had died, the mother was cradling a sick 5-year old, her 10-year-old was dying, too, and the family had reached a treatment center but couldn't get in.
"These men and women and children are just sitting, waiting to die, right now." Obama said. "And it doesn't have to be this way."
The U.S. is promising to deliver 17 hundred-bed treatment centers to Liberia, where contagious patients often sit in the streets, turned away from packed Ebola units. The Pentagon expects to have the first treatment units open within a few weeks, part of the heightened U.S. response that also includes training more local health care workers.
"This massive ramp-up of support from the United States is precisely the kind of transformational change we need to get a grip on the outbreak and begin to turn it around," said WHO Director-General Margaret Chan.
Doctors Without Borders, which has sounded the alarm for months, also welcomed the U.S. effort but said it must be put into action immediately — and that other countries must follow suit because the window to contain the virus is closing.
"The response to Ebola continues to fall dangerously behind, and too many lives are being lost," said Brice de le Vingne, the group's director of operations. "We need more countries to stand up, we need greater concrete action on the ground, and we need it now."
Dr. Kent Brantly, an American physician who survived Ebola he contracted while working in Liberia, met with Obama at the White House Tuesday. He is one of three aid workers with Ebola who have been treated at Emory.
Later, he told a packed Senate hearing, "We must move quickly and immediately to deliver the promises that have been made."
CDC's Dr. Beth Bell told senators the outbreak is "ferocious and spreading exponentially."
"If we do not act now to stop Ebola, we could be dealing with it for years to come," she warned.
The U.S. already has spent more than $100 million fighting the outbreak. Obama administration officials said some of the costs of the new military response would be covered by $500 million in overseas contingency operations, such as the war in Afghanistan, that the Pentagon already has asked Congress to redirect for West Africa and for humanitarian assistance in Iraq. The Obama administration submitted a request to Congress late Tuesday to reprogram another $500 million in defense money for efforts against the disease.
Congress still must vote on an Obama administration request for $88 million more to help the Ebola fight, including funding CDC work in West Africa through December and speeding development of experimental treatments and vaccines.
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said urgent action was needed. "We must take the dangerous, deadly threat of the Ebola epidemic as seriously as we take ISIS," he said, referring to the extremist group in Syria and Iraq.
But some lawmakers questioned if the heightened U.S. response will be enough.
Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., said, "My math says we're going to be behind the eight ball on Day 1 because we won't have enough beds."
An aid worker from Sierra Leone put a face on the region's desperation. Ishmeal Alfred Charles of Freetown told senators that as he prepared to leave home, his 10-year-old daughter asked, "They said there is no Ebola in America. Why can't you take us along?"
The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Thursday on the crisis, and the head of the United Nations said the General Assembly will follow up with a high-level meeting next week as the world body "is taking the lead now" on the international fight.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed Obama's plan, his spokesman said in a statement, and called on the international community "to be as bold and courageous in its response as those who are on the frontlines fighting this disease."
White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the 3,000 troops would not provide direct care to Ebola patients. In addition to delivering the 17 treatment facilities, they will help train as many as 500 local health care workers a week. Among the other initiatives, the military will:
—Set up a headquarters in Monrovia, Liberia, led by Maj. Gen. Darryl Williams, head of U.S. Army Africa.
—Build a regional transportation and staging base in Senegal where the U.S. will help coordinate the contributions of other allies and partners.
—Provide home health care kits to hundreds of thousands of households, designed to help healthy people caring for Ebola-stricken family members. That includes 50,000 that the U.S. Agency for International Development will deliver to Liberia this week.
—Carry out a home- and community-based campaign to train local populations on how to handle exposed patients.
In Monrovia, Boima Folley runs a sport materials shop and said he'd welcome the U.S. military response.
"We have been praying to get the disease wiped out of our country, so if the coming of U.S. troops will help us get that done, we should be happy," he said. "The soldiers don't have to have medical backgrounds."

Diverticolosi e diverticolite: dieta e cura

Diverticolosi e diverticolite: dieta e cura

Dieta e diverticolite

In particolare, in chiave preventiva, sembra importante consumare soprattutto fibre insolubili (cellulosa, lignina e derivati) contenute in alcuni vegetali e nei cereali integrali.

Abolire spezie, cibi piccanti (pepepeperoncino, currynoce moscata), alcolici, bevande, gassate, thè (ammesso quello deteinato), caffè (ammesso quello decaffeinato) e cioccolato.
